Research Poster Application Guidelines

Links to pre-entry and main application are at the bottom of this page

Poster title “The wonder (≒research theme) I am pursuing” (47 words or less)

Titles of up to 47 characters are not thesis-style titles such as “Consideration of ...” but rather web article headlines and newspaper article titles. Titles that are too thesis-like or contain technical terms are not appealing. Even if you yourself are a researcher in a different field, a title that says “Oh, that sounds interesting” is not appealing. What kind of research themes do you find intriguing? Please refer to the research theme titles listed here (from the publicly available materials of the Kyoto University Center for Interdisciplinary Research).

Since the next question is “(2) My message that I want to ask everyone”, the title should not be a question like “What is...? I think it would be better if the title is not a question like “What is...? The questions would overlap. The title should be worded in a formal way to balance the overall message. (From the curator)

3 hashtags (I want to connect with people like this)

This is to be listed under the title of the study and should include the following information: “I am looking for these kinds of findings! I want to interact or collaborate with such a person (researcher)! Please describe three images of the person you are looking for. Please note that if the total number of characters in a hashtag is too large, the secretariat will make adjustments, for example, only the first hashtag will be listed. Please understand!

◯ Examples of acceptable entries

People who like to tinker with data, people who like ancient Japanese characters, people who like cats, people who are bilingual, etc.

X NG examples
People in the information science field, #Philosophy, #Chinese history, etc.

My message to everyone (-200 words)

Questions for others. Describe in question format (-200 words) questions you would like to ask, advice you would like to seek, or topics you would like to discuss with the participants of this project in relation to what you would like to do, difficulties you are having, or other issues you are facing, etc.

Example)

What do you think about...?

“Would you like to think about... together?

Tell us about your ...!

What is your image of ...?

Short phrases are clearly more responsive to sticky notes!

Wonders I am exploring (250-300 words)

What kind of “wonders” are you interested in pursuing? Please describe the question (theme) at the core of your research in the form of “wonder”. For example

Why does that thinker talk about everything but never mention...? For example, “Why does that thinker talk about all kinds of things but never mention ...?

Why is that physical phenomenon so impossible in common sense? Why did that happen?

Why can't they make a microscopic intensity analyzer when they have such a high resolution microscope?

Why do people wait in line?

By writing about “wonders,” our goal was to avoid the appearance of a general “research introduction” or “explanation of research themes. Research introductions tend to be more specialized, but “wonders” are rooted in feelings, thoughts, original sensations, and original experiences before becoming specialized. It is more open, more flexible, and easier for the reader to ask questions than a research introduction. In this way, we aim to remove barriers between disciplines.

▶ For problem-solving themes

For example, by focusing on the background and history of the issue, such as “Why did humans have this issue? In this project, we will not only focus on the importance of problem-solving, but also on why the problem you are tackling is a “problem”! The goal of this project is to ask many people why they think the issue is important, and to deepen their awareness of their own issues and problems in a more essential way. I know this is a bit of a long-winded way of saying this, but in this project we will not only ask about the methodological HOW to solve problems, but we will also ask, “I think this is a problem. What about you? The purpose of this project is to get good feedback on the direction of your own research theme.

You may also want to dig deeper into your personal history and background that led you to focus on the question. What motivated you to solve “the problem” in the first place? What is it that drives you, what is the “wonder, the question” there?

▶ I am a natural scientist and cannot write for other fields or for the general public! For those who say “I am a natural scientist and cannot write for other fields or for the general public!

Certainly, I have seen many posters that used too many technical terms or required too many prerequisites to understand, and some of them did not have enough sticky notes because they did not resonate with other fields. After one year's project, a certain condensed matter physicist regretted that he should have written more clearly, but that is not true. Of course, there are technical devices such as not using technical terms, but “writing (communicating) in an easy-to-understand manner” is the job of science communicators, not that of researchers. Researchers should only talk about the “connection” between their research themes and society. This is not to say that you should write about “useful things” or “benefits to society.

Your theme (the wonder you are pursuing) is something that every human being should feel wonder about! You just have to try to convey those core things and the interest you feel. Again, not the content of the research, but the fun and excitement of the research you feel! The reader of your poster will say, “Well, I don't know the details, but this kind of decrease certainly seems strange, and somehow it is interesting that such wonders exist in nature. Let's aim to make people think this way. This is the connection between (individual interest) and (overall human interest).

Even if it is not the current research theme you have been working on, you can ask for something you would like to do in the future, such as, “I just thought of something (outside of my field of expertise). (I'm not a specialist, but I suddenly had an idea about this kind of thing. Let's do that and gather people who will be interested in it!

We sometimes receive applications with less than 250 characters. Please fill in at least 250 words.

What you have done so far and what you are going to do (250-300 words)

What have you done so far on this ‘wonder’ and what do you intend to do in the future?

Describe your own research activities with light reference to precedents and similar studies. Describe the historical, academic and present-day significance of the question and where you are now. (250-300 words)

Occasionally we receive applications with less than 250 characters. Please provide a minimum of 250 words.

Preparing to submit images

However, they should be abstract ‘a piece of Tskami that conveys an atmosphere’ and are different from figures and tables to be included in the paper. Therefore, punch pictures and graphs such as PowerPoint slides are not acceptable. Basically, text is also not allowed. If text is included, the secretariat will trim or delete parts of the text.

Please make sure that the images are related to the research theme as much as possible. The images should be related to the research theme as much as possible.

There is a tendency to use too many photos of landscapes, such as the sky or the sea!

Note that the images are numbered with the poster number (see right).

Invitation to group sessions

As you can see on the previous page, during the Poster Presentation Conference
27-31 Jan, there will be a variety of sessions!

I'm thinking, ‘This researcher and this researcher, they're in different fields, but share the same interest! It will be interesting to talk together!’
‘This researcher and this researcher have the exact opposite thematics, lol, wouldn't that be a stimulating dialogue?

The secretariat will make a grouping of these researchers, and will invite you to participate in turn.
If you cannot make it, of course you have no choice, but please be aware that the secretariat may invite you to join us during these five days,
